When Brian and Helen Rohan found a vacant Stirling property 30 years ago, they knew it had the potential to be something special.
“It was used for sheep farming and had tree stumps all over it, and I could see it was unusual to get such a big block so close to Stirling. I just fell in love with it because it’s got a lovely view over Mt Lofty,” Mr Rohan says.
“And as soon as I bought it I started planting trees.”
The couple built a small bespoke cottage and then, about 20 years ago, added a swimming pool and expanded it to include additional accommodation.
“Helen always wanted to run a bed and breakfast so we thought if we put a pool in and built a small bed and breakfast on the other side that would help pay it off,” Mr Rohan says.
“We’ve since been renting the pool out as an aqua-aerobics business and have several girls running aqua-aerobics classes here. A number of physiotherapists use it and we now rent it out for 36 hours a week at a very good rate. The bed and breakfast has proved very popular.”
All up, the property has four separate wings and offers seven bedrooms over two floors, and has four kitchens and a kitchenette.
Mr Rohan says the home is a great entertainer, allowing them to host sit-down meals for about 50 people if needed.
“It’s been a fantastic place to live and it will be very hard to leave, but it’s time for us to move into something a bit smaller,” he says.
