Athelstone provides a blueprint for a quieter lifestyle close to the Adelaide Hills, but also near essential suburban amenities.
As Gaynor and Kurt Meyer say — it’s got the convenience you’d expect of an inner suburb with natural trimmings.
The couple are reluctantly giving up the serenity of their cul-de-sac location, selling their modern, four-bedroom home in Burnbank Grove after four and a half years.
“It is simply time to downsize now,” Gaynor says.
“The tranquillity of the location is incredible and I feel very safe here, too.”
“It’s amazing because you have all the convenience you’d want such as shops nearby and other amenities, but you get to enjoy that peaceful, country feel and great views.”
CoreLogic data shows the median house price has increased 9.3 per cent in the past 12 months.
“There are so many beautiful walks around here and we get to see echidnas and koalas in the street at times too.” Gaynor says they have the “countryside” just behind them, including Black Hill Conservation Park.
Yet she can “walk down the hill” to shop at Romeo’s Foodland supermarket on Fox Avenue.
“I also use the Coles and Woolworths stores at the corner of Stradbroke and Montacute Roads and the Foodland at Newton at times,” she says.
“It’s a very friendly neighbourhood and we know all our neighbours, too.
“There are lots of newer homes in our vicinity but older parts of Athelstone have started to be redeveloped, especially in the last two years.”
The suburb is also dotted with many reserves.
Sales agent Kevin Nguyen of Belle Property Norwood says Athelstone satisfies a common priority — access to quality schools like St Ignatius College, in its midst.
“It’s a very family-orientated area with many buyers attracted by the available schools, including many Chinese buyers,” he says.
“There are also enough larger, four-bedroom homes in the area to cater for bigger families.”
